Live Music: Bertha Hightower-Smith
Bertha Hightower-Smith
Bertha Hightower-Smith is a name synonymous with music. From an early age growing up in College Park, Georgia, Bertha has always had a passion for music and was inspired by her father, a self-taught bass singer with perfect pitch. Bertha received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Clark College (presently Clark Atlanta University) where she studied flute under Professor James H. Patterson.
She currently resides in Fayetteville, Georgia with her husband, Paul, and is retired from Delta Airlines. Bertha always shares her God-given musical gifts, whether it is locally, nationally or abroad.
Along with performing, she is skilled in teaching music, instrumental and vocal, and organizing and directing instrumental ensembles and choirs. Included in her many performances are opening roles in various conferences which include the church music workshop of Jackson, Mississippi. There, she has opened for gospel greats such as Richard Smallwood, Daryl Coley, and others. Being a flautist with the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Band, (which is a 75+ membership of volunteer musicians from all over metro Atlanta) as well as a flautist for communion worship at her home church, Christians for a Change Baptist Church, are two of her greatest joys in music performance.
In 2008, she was featured in a flute recital at the Clayton County Arts Center in Morrow, Georgia, and in April 2016, the Samuel H. Johnson SSSP Foundation featured Bertha in a successful benefit concert at the Southwest Performing Arts Center in Atlanta.

Live Music: Siohvan Smith
Siohvan Smith
Siohvan Smith, known professionally on Instagram as @siohvansings, is a vocalist and creator active in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area. She presents herself unapologetically as a “genre-less” artist, positioning her voice as the central instrument of her work rather than aligning with a single musical category. Her Instagram presence functions as her primary artistic platform, where she shares performance clips, original music teasers, and project announcements, signaling a self-directed, entrepreneurial approach to building her audience and body of work.
Stylistically, Siohvan’s music is vocal-forward and expressive, drawing on influences commonly associated with contemporary R&B, soul, singer-songwriter, and alternative pop without being constrained by any one of them. Her posts show an emphasis on layered vocals, emotional delivery, and live or organic instrumentation, suggesting a preference for musicality and texture over heavily programmed production. She has publicly credited herself as a writer, performer, and arranger on at least one original song (“Nostalgia”), reinforcing her identity as a hands-on creative rather than solely a featured vocalist.
Overall, @siohvansings reflects an emerging artist focused on authenticity, vocal craft, and steady creative output within Atlanta’s broader independent music ecosystem.

It was just me her and my little brother growing up but I mainly went to school in Gwinnett county. I moved down here five years ago. Both my biological parents are musicians. Music has been in my family for generations. I started playing music at 4 or 5 started with drums and made my way to guitar. So I’ve always been in love with music. I’ve played mostly on the southside. Private gigs, restaurants, bars, church’s etc. I started playing out by myself last year. Places like “awkward brewing” (where I met farayi), “Senoia beer”, “Trilith live”, “northside tavern”, “nutwood winery” (in Lagrange.) and I am in two bands right now. “Briarsuite” and “the room”.
